All of you on the internets know that URB loves Hyperdub big-time. So when beloved and relatively underground funky production duo Ill Blu got signed to the label, it was an exciting thing to hear about. Then hearing their debut 12″ for the label (Bellion/Dragon Pop, OUT NOW) was just colossal in terms of greatness and dancefloor variety. The duo of Def1 and Jreel talk to URB for a bit about their world cup sound preferences, their introductions into making tunes and how they got signed to Hyperdub. Also coming with this is an exclusive 20 minute mix they did for Mathieu Schreyer’s show on KCRW (big-ups to them). Mix and Q/A after the jump.

URB: Where did you two meet and were you originally making funky tunes from the start?

DEF 1: we both met via a mutual friend recording some hip hop material, I (Def1) started out in drum and bass, UK garage and hip-hop then linked up with Jreel who has previously been making RnB, hip-hop and gospel music.

URB: You have a pretty hefty list of remixes you’ve done, do you like remixing more than making your original tunes?

D1: Nothing beats making an original piece of music that bangs out in the clubs, remixes are great though!

URB: What are some of your previous influences that brought you to making the music you put out today?

D1: I would say its a fusion; a lot of genres from jungle to dubstep house to hip-hop… we have a very wide range of influences between us.

URB: How did you get in touch with Hyperdub for your Bellion/Dragon Pop release?

D1: Our mate Scratcha (DVA) made the link Kode9 heard it on a show and got in contact instantly and the rest is history.

URB: Preference for the party vibe: Airhorn or vuvuzela?

D1: VUVUZELLLLLA! *laughs*
