The best and worst of human nature can rear their twin heads at any time, maybe especially so at festivals. Camp Bisco has a reputation, and it’s often overlooked in the pantheon of festivals; a gem to those who take ownership of it as “their festival” and who’d just as soon you don’t know and don’t come to the party, thank you very much. It’s intimate like that, private and a little “just for us” to 15,000 people. That could be about to change as people in the northeast wake up, and realize what they’ve been missing right there on their doorstep.

The crowd at Bisco is low-key: there are expectations of mind-blowing good times, but there’s no hurry. There are three days of ‘Camp, and it will come. People are mostly pretty chilled and friendly, though when I stopped to film a hula-hoop girl, I was called-out by a catty female voice in the crowd yelling out, “Sure, media, film the local strippers hula-hooping!”… That voice was immediately drowned out by other sisters who had the hula-hooper’s back, saying “I wish I could hula like that” and “She’s awesome!”

You should be able to hula-hoop as best and un-self-consciously as you can, without someone putting kibosh on you because the enormity of your sexuality threatens them. Fuck them.

Which is just what Skerrit Bwoy did, on stage, living the dream and inviting women up to dance as sexy as they wanted and getting into some full-on stage sex (with clothes on, but still), daggering in many fancy positions.  In our society, I’m not sure the ladies have complete ownership their sexuality just yet collectively (the short answer’s no, but there’s a lot of history to get past), but at some point none of that really matters anymore, as you just get down.

At the end of the day, if you got it like that, big or small, short or tall, black, white, purple or rainbow-colored, that’s all you really need. Respect.
