Pitchfork Day 3: Hipster Heaven

Inarguably Pitchfork’s trendiest stage of the lineup, the arrival of Day 3 brought with it a legion of tight-jean wearing (despite the heat), plaid shirt- donned enthusiasm. The  day started with newcomers Best Coast’s melancholy surf  rock, fronted by the charming Bethanny Cosentino. The band went through a slew of songs, with Cosentino’s alluring vocals weaving through happy melodies with underlying lyrics of heartache and inadequacy . Washed Out’s (Ernest Greene) mellow synthpop soon followed, the newcomer generating a huge crowd of chill head-nodders (a small amount of dancing occurred when Greene played his hit “Get Up). At one point, Greene tried to up the crowd’s energy, asking everyone to “sing along” to “Feel It All Around”. One problem: no one knew the words, but Greene won over the crowd despite their unfamiliarity with his material. Beach House’s dream pop garnered a large crowd, with Victoria Legrand leading the band in an  impressively solid vocal performance. Alex Scally was the voice of the band, providing banter to balance out House’s haunting performance.
