It’s been a rough couple of months for M.I.A. with the difficult launch of her third album, Maya. Some call it classic media backlash, while others will insist that the album’s challenging sound fails to live up to her previous efforts. But M.I.A. has always had her ups and downs. Here’s some of the most significant ones in her career.
UP: “Galang” (2003)

Inspired by instruction from Peaches on the Roland MC-505 drum machine, artist/graphic designer Maya Arulpragasam records several demos, including the song “Galang.” A largely unprecedented mix of dancehall, electro and world beats, the song circulates widely on the Internet. A cover story in The Fader give M.I.A. her first international press.

She’s a scam, can say that from personal experience with her and her little slaves that work for her. I used to be her biggest fan, but now, I despise her, she is a horrible person, she’s worse then her music.
who’s managing her, now???
M.I.A. is a solid artist. I enjoy it, sans pretension. Hopefully everyone realizes that the media has an interest in provoking controversy. Hirschberg is a tabloid writer. What more can i say…. ha ha
Enjoy the Music :]
she is the biggest fraud on the music scene, britney spears has more authenticity than this chick at least she doesnt pretend to be someone else, thank god the hipster brain washing machine is imploding
spend that bronfman money you fake ass also this is american honey we like good hooks, verses….please stop force feeding this crap down our throats and let REAL artists shine
one last thing
YOUR DAD WAS NEVER A TERRORIST OR TAMILTIGER LYING HO…STOP TRYING TO MAKE YOUR VERY BORING LIFE SOUND EXCITING, GO GET YOUR NAILS DID!
MIA has been making horrible music since shes come out. period point blank. if her biggest hit is the song that sampled a 4 second line of one of her verses that should speak volumes. she plain and simply has NO SOUL …she wants to be some psuedopostpunk diva but she just lacks soul so she has to blame reporters and artists like lady gaga for her continued failures.
m.i.a. is slowly becoming true to her name….m.i.a.
and as a south asian i cant wait until shes forgotten and a real artist from out community comes out. not some white wash sell out.
two words for you …maya
kill yourself
I was at that LA Knitting Factory show in Feb (whatever year that was). I remember it like it was yesterday. It was 1 or 2 days after my bday so I was stoked. The only reason I had even heard of her was because of that Fader issue. I thought no one would be there so I didn’t order tickets in advance and when I showed up it was sold out. Well I finagled my way into the show. Her set was real short but Diplo spun afterwards and the jams he played made up for it. I swore I could’ve died that night and I wouldn’t have been upset. Ever since discovering her i’ve been a huge fan. I’ve remixed her music countless times. I would say /\/\ /\ \/ /\ is the worst of her catalog but it doesn’t suck by any means. If you think about it, Rusko produced most of it so it’s easy to see how his sound shaped the album. I don’t see how some are sh^tting on the album. If you read her interviews she clearly states that she likes to do things to provoke and things that are against what people want to hear. And that’s what we got this album. It sucks that HARD LA got cancelled and I am appalled that they are allowing people to use those tickets for HARD SUMMER. Yes I know you can get a refund but the difference in those lineups are huge in my opinion. So until we see what acts will be transfered over, I’ll wait. Anyways, few artists keep sh^t exciting so be appreciative of the spectacle.
Pre-Pinapple Express= Amazing
Post-Pineapple Express= Shit
It’s that easy.
first off bamboo banga is one of the sickest tracks ever. she’s started her show the wiltern with it and the energy was off the hook. but for me, my best mia is a secret show in the fall of ‘09 at a warehouse in la called lot 613 and it was amazing. did some of her hits and some new stuff. she had her stage setup and the full get up. super cool since i’ve seen her twice before, but this was up close and personal. she was raw, humble and quite nervous just being herself. this was all without media and cameras watching her. some time later saw her backstage at nocturnal festival watching diplo’s set and spoke with her. down to earth and as real as it gets as an artist.
MIA killed at Vegoose 07
2007 was so 3 years ago…
“releases secret recordings of the interview claiming that Hirschberg recommended ordering the fries.”
It’s not actually a matter of claiming. Hirschberg never challenged the transcripts, she just defended her behavior.
Once M.I.A.’s transcripts came out they revealed that Hirschberg not only recombined sections of the interview while making them appear as if it was M.I.A. verbatim, she was also really pushy about ordering those fries!
