This past Sunday, New York City celebrated the official launch of okayafrica.com, a brand new division from the team behind okayplayer. An estimated 20,000 fans came to celebrate their launch with a free concert featuring The Roots, Talib Kweli, Bajah and The Dry Eye Crew, Blitz the Ambassador and the Embassy Ensemble, J Period, DJ Op!, Dhundee and many many more acts who shared the stage at Prospect Park’s annual music and arts festival, Celebrate Brooklyn.

The concert doubled as Brooklyn’s largest World Cup 2010 celebration on the day of Spain’s victory, but the only signs of that were a few vuvuzelas sparsed through the crowd. It was clear the fans were there for the show, and furthermore, to kickstart the newly formed community.
Okayafrica is the brand new editorial from The Roots’ decade-long-running progressive urban culture website. This new destination, okayafrica.com, serves up a streamlined editorial source “for everything that’s hot and jumping in the new African cultural renaissance across the vast diaspora.”

On first glance, this doesn’t look like your traditional Putamayo compilation or Starbucks’ earth tone soundtrack. okayafrica strives to be the pulse of a vibrant new creative community, coming from the far reaches of African influence. From breakthrough genre artists like Zakee, dance crazes like the Jacky Jacky, to the voice of young organizations working to save children in Congo, okayafrica aims to deliver the stories of today’s most progressive arts and culture.
Look forward to seeing more from okayafrica from feature stories, events and contests.
