Footfood Mix

When playing in the European Nu-Balearic League, few players offer the depth of Norway’s Joachim Dyrdahl (aka diskJokke). His latest full-length on Smalltown Supersound, En Fin Tid, is an object lesson in deep space disco grooves. This mix done exclusively for URB is in a similar vein, but with some nice surprises along the way. Tracklist and diskJokke Q+A after the jump.

diskJokke Interview

URB: Tell us a little bit about your new album.
Diskjokke: It goes a little to the left and a little to the right from [my first album] Staying In, it is both more relaxed and more up-tempo. In despite of this, I feel it has a more clear direction and a feeling of continuity when listening to it as a whole. Of course, some tracks are meant for the club and some for the beach, it is not a concept album or an album designed for one type of use.

Is the scene in Oslo a big inspiration for you, or do not consider yourself as a part of a “scene”?
D: The scene in Oslo is a huge inspiration due to the display of undisputed talent and genius surrounding me, seems like whenever we meet up or chat, someone has taken a step in a new direction musically or gone new ways production-wise.

Do you agree on labeling your music as prog-disco or balearic? I can also hear post-rock and shoegaze in your music; is it all just mutations of kraut?
D: The good thing about the balearic label is that almost anything goes, our audience is, like us, open minded, and are looking for a certain feeling in the music rather than a specific sound or type of riff. As the need for a label appears, I think I could do a lot worse than “prog-disco”; it kind of suits my music whether it is relaxing or dancy.

Would you describe your music as contemporary?
D: Hmmm… does saying no to this make me pretentious? It most certainly relates to a contemporary current, but it is so far from the main trends that I never imagine it going out of fashion.

Being classically trained, is your work methods very different from your producer friends?
D: Not so much anymore, maybe at first when I was learning how to do plug the melodies from my head into midi. Nowadays I’m just pressing record and playing without thinking so much

What do you think is the most unexpected source of musical inspiration for you?
D: Ambient music. This genre has really grown on me the last couple of years, it is present in several tracks on En Fin Tid and don’t be surprised if a whole album devoted to this input is to surface within the next couple of years.
