Thieves Like Us
Again And Again
Thieves Like Us are two Swedes and one American living in Berlin, Paris, and Milan. This multi-national band is out with their second long player Again and Again, recorded in early 2009 in a basement in Paris. This lo-fi pop band got their name from the 1984 New Order song, and it doesn’t stop there. The album is filled with references to 80’s electronic, goth and post-punk bands.
Album opener “Never Known Love” opens up like a slow pop song with a youth sounding chorus a la Passion Pit or Peter, Bjorn and John. “Shyness,” a melancholic but up-tempo track with filtered keys is next before a string of anonymous tracks follows. The album closes with the 2 strongest but also the weakest track. “The Walk” is an up-tempo rock song with energetic bass lines and cowbells, but it’s followed by the horrible and shallow Pet Shop Boys synth sounding “So Clear”. Album closer “Forget Me Not” is the strongest cut; an Air sounding production with acoustic guitar over a steady beat and layered vocals.
Again and Again is an atmospheric album, but it suffers under often nonsense lyrics, uninspired vocals and borrowed production. It doesn’t leave a lasting impression.
