For years, Detroit-based hip-hop group Slum Village has been cockroach of raps. They just would not be stopped. Despite the departure (and later death) of founding members J Dilla and Baatin, original member T3 has persevered, recording and performing with Elzhi (who joined the group in 2001) as Slum Village for almost a decade. Today, Elzhi’s manager issued a statement saying, “”For all intents and purposes concerning eLZhi, Slum Village is defunct. This is the last SV LP.”
No word from T3 on if he intends to continue under the Slum Village moniker. The LP referred to in the statement is Villa Manifesto, which features contributions from Dwele, De La Soul, Little Brother, Colin Munroe, Phife, Illa J, Young RJ, J Dilla, Dave West, Hi-Tek, and Mr. Porter. The first single, “Faster” was released last month, with the fulllength scheduled to drop in the coming weeks.
