Rainbow Arabia (Concert)

Residencies not only provide free shows but allow bands to use the regularity of a local weekly gig to work out the kinks, which L.A.’s Rainbow Arabia has been doing for three weeks at the Echo on Sunset. They started off in early June with a thin crowd and many technical difficulties, and each Monday night the people have multiplied as the difficulties have diminished. With Abe Vigoda opening June 21, the two-piece turned in their most satisfying show yet to a very congested house — the night after a shooting rampage, no less — which seemed just a body or two shy of breaking into full-on dance party to the duo’s infectious, Middle Eastern- and punk-rock-influenced dance-pop. Tiffany Preston supplies lead vocals, occasional drums and whistle while husband Danny Preston supplies everything else on keyboards, computer and various processors. There’s still a little work to be done on the timing with all those knobs and buttons. Pauses are too long setting up between songs and there’s too many accidental noises, which kills the momentum. The final show Monday, June 28, with Gary Wilson, is almost guaranteed to be the biggest turnout yet. The group seems to have been holding off on hits like “Holiday in the Congo.” If they can smooth things out, one of L.A.’s most promising and likeable groups could turn their final night into a memorable beginning.
