Baths – Cerulean (Review)

Baths

Cerulean

Released by anticon.

The anticon sound has experienced a discernible shift from weirdo rap to ambient, richly-textured soundscapes in recent years. While I can still enjoy the dadaist raps of yesteryear, the recent electronic chaos unleashed by the likes of Tobacco, Dosh and now Baths, is hard to resist. Will Wiesenfiled, the artist better known as Baths, taught himself various instruments including the viola, contra bass and guitar and has been recording music since the age of 13. His densely-layered orchestra on Cerulean includes everything from snapping scissors to running water in addition to his delicate, awkward crooning.

Having recently finished his residency at Los Angeles’ Low End Theory, Baths could not be in higher demand these days. When you hear the breath of fresh air encompassed in tracks like “Lovely Bloodflow” and “♥” it’s not difficult to see why. His solo debut is a warm, electro-acoustic endeavor packed with magnetic twists and turns that make each song its own unique journey. Baths’ airy voice would seemingly lend itself to melancholy realms, but he only occasionally indulges on tracks such as “Rain Smell” and “Departure.” Expertly-executed self-sampling, glitchy percussion, and melodic strumming enables Baths to tell his Cerulean story with an impressive economy of words.

Song you’ll remember in five years: “Lovely Bloodflow”

I really think this is the kind of sound that will get more people into anticon. It’s more accessible then a lot of their previous releases. The strongest tracks on the album are definitely, like you mentioned, the ones that stay away from melancholy (”♥” or “Indoorsy” – the strongest track).

I hope to hear more of this sound from anticon in the near future.
