Notes For Haiti

Released by Oxfam America

In response to the catastrophic series of earthquakes and aftershocks experienced in Haiti, a collective of musicians from Detroit, MI and Los Angeles, CA came together with faith in the people- us.  They formulated the project, “Notes For Haiti” in hopes that we can make a difference; and not only do, but believe in it as well.  This album is a way to thank and remind us, of not only our fortunes, but also our duties as a society – in remaining thankful and humble, during such times.

Initially, this project was a will from Detroit native, Niles Heron- fellow Poet, Artist and Writer among other titles, but with this project specifically, as a Facilitator – He introduced the idea to his good friend and music lover, Sarah Lockridge-Steckel (who by no means, is a stranger to the non-profit sector). They realized the potential of the project, and between them they were able to get a co-sign from Oxfam America.

Those featured, include: Karriem Riggins, eLZhi (of Slum Village), Blu (XXL Freshman Top 10 2009), Fashawn (XXL Freshman Top 10 2010), Exile, Aloe Blacc, Crown Royale (Buff 1 and DJ Rhettmatic), Invincible, Now On (Mayer Hawthorne, IX Lives, Jackson Perry), 14KT, Houseshoes, Co$, Sene, AB, Marv Won, Jordan Rockswell, Astro, MED, and SlopFunkDust.

This album is compiled with some of Hip-Hop’s most well respected artists. All of them creatively known for, in their given craft. My favorite tracks seemed to be from some of LA’s more recent and upcoming artists – one of which being Spanish Winter by Blu. This track has an upbeat baseline, catchy enough to interest even the most “non Hip-Hop” listeners. Blu is able to transcend the lines of genre; keeping it upbeat and fresh – while expressing himself with lyrics that touch base on the most controversial topics of God and Love. Something we can all relate to.

Another favorite is Underdog feat. MEDaphor, by Astro.  The title should say enough in relating to the concept of less is more. Something I truly believe in.  Sometimes, simplicity is the key element in keeping it real, and as we all know, the most tall tale message hip-hop portrays is just that – “keeping it real.” With that said, the makers of underdog – Astro is on the rise.  Be on the lookout.

The project is entirely driven by the generosity of people who donate and download. For as little as $1, and as much as you want to give. The makers are entrusting you to “pay what you want” and receive the beautiful works – of countless hours spent in creating this album. It’s a token of appreciation from them. After all, music is a form of expression, and the expression that “Notes for Haiti” is making, is one of faith.

Although I am able to touch base and give you verbal previews to some of the tracks, there are so many more unmentioned in this compilation. Let me just say, these words can never convey what is expressed through the universal language of music. Be sure to tune in and get to know the artists, in their most intimate form.

As Aloe Blacc has said “I Need A Dollar.” And God knows, Haiti can really use it right now. Please support the cause and donate to “Notes For Haiti.”

The proceeds of the project are funneled directly through the website (http://notesforhaiti.bandcamp.com) to Oxfam America, who’s ongoing Haiti relief efforts have already affected more than 400,000 lives.

We wanted to help thank the artists and fans for their generosity, and remind them that our support yesterday, today, and tomorrow, really can change lives.” –Niles Heron and Sarah Lockridge-Steckel
