After Saturday’s blowout, the easy assumption is that Sunday would be a more mellow affair. This was true to a degree as the day started later than usual, but with only one night to go, people were ready to close out Mutek 2010 with a bang.
Piknic 2 was moved to Metropolis, one of the night venues, due to rain. With Piknic’s largest draw being that it’s outdoors in the sun, the attendance for that was a little on the sparse side for the park, but fit nicely into the club. France’s Pépé Braddock was a perfect closer for the event, drifting through minimal, Chicago house, disco and back again throughout his set, most importantly making it all cohesive. He left the audience clamoring for more, hopes dashed because of the festivities already running late.

After a few hours of rest, it was time for the last Nocturne event of the festival. Excitement was running highest for the event’s second act, the Moritz von Oswald trio. Moritz von Oswald, joined by Vladislav Delay and Max Loderbauer, coupled throbbing dub bass with techno and jazz, with Delay in particular playing over a dozen percussion instruments. A mellow set, but an example of the maturity of electronic music.
Things picked up with Brandt Brauer Frick. The German trio locked into a groove early, then let their live keys and percussion add a human touch to their driving, motorik-based tracks. What their set lacked in funk/soul it made up for in efficiency, ending with an appreciative audience thankful for the warmup.

Theo Parrish had soul to spare. After a half hour battling a slew of technical problems (skipping needles, an unfamiliar setup), Parrish finally got momentum and from there played like a man possessed, as jazzed by his selections as the audience. A patient jock, Parrish initially played tracks that could prompt little more than a sway, but built that into a crowd roaring after every record, especially up front. He closed his set with exclamations of how much he’d enjoyed himself, then extolled the virtues of vinyl to the audience hoping he’d play one more track. People then headed out into the city, hoping to keep the party going even though Mutek proper was done until next year.
