DJ Koze at Piknik 1
The highlight of the Mutek weekend is the Piknic events. Piknik Electronik draws thousands to Montreal parks with their lineups, and Mutek wisely pairs up with them to give the people some fun outside, with plenty of booze, food and beats to keep the masses happy.
As predicted the Piknik was marred by intermittent downpours. The rain didn’t keep people from showing up and dancing, it just meant they were wetter as they did so. Minilogue got the people moving with blippy minimal, but things really got going with DJ Koze, who dropped into deeper, housier territory, perfect for the time and space. After standing around in the rain, many opted against going to the free performance by Señor Coconut, but as it was open to the public, there were thousands in attendance to hear the celebrate their 10-year anniversary.

Henrik Schwarz
The evening’s festivities were back at Metropolis, starting late and running until the sun came up. The main room featured an opening deep set by Move D before moving into the evening’s live performances. Guillaume Coutu DuMont & the Side Effects inspired the crowd to action with feel-good vocals from SF’s Dave Aju.
The evening closed with Innervisions jocks Henrik Schwarz and Dixon, neither of whom disappointed. Schwarz fused jazz, house, techno in his live set, dancing almost as much behind his setup as the audience did on the floor. Dixon stood to the side of the stage during Schwarz’s set surveying the crowd. When he hit the decks, he similarly crossed genres and made sure to keep the crowd firmly in his grasp. The audience barely thinned by the time his set came to an end at 6am.

Great review, but we thought Dixon was kind of a let down.
I’ve been a huge fan of the guy for 3-4 years now and I couldn’t wait to see him live at Mutek.
Unfortunately, I don’t think he’s such a great fit for a 4AM gig. His style and music selection is a little too deep for that peak hour time… Would have prefer to hear him at Piknik the day after. Nevertheless a great party and Henrik was a real treat.
