Mutek 2010 Day Three – Nathan Fake, King Midas Sound, Actress, Shed

Nathan Fake Headphone Concert

Nathan Fake Headphone Concert

As the weekend approached, the mood at Mutek lifted, with more people coming out and more people ready to party until the wee hours of the morning.

The music started with an outdoor concert in a plaza across from Monument-National. Nathan Fake played to an appreciative crowd, but the concert took place as everyone wore headphones. It was all smiles and while there wasn’t much dancing, the set was much more engaging than the prior night’s, where all nuance was lost with the overpowering sound and visuals.
Many opted to skip the night’s ambient programming, saving their energy for the long night ahead. Overcast Sound kicked things off in the SAT, and channeled, well Basic Channel with their deep dubby constructions. The simple visuals were a nice pairing, as the audience remained seated, bobbing their heads.
Actress looked right out of Detroit’s Underground Resistance during his set over at Club Soda. Looking militantly stoic with his hoodie up, he stood mostly still for a third of his set before beginning a slight bob. Technical issues marred the set, with a blown subwoofer in one corner and the sound completely dropping for a few moments. The crowd was appreciative but didn’t quite know what to do with themselves, since beats flowed in and out of the mix as Actress defied all manner of genre categorization. Ambient-dub-tech-house? Sure, why not?
King Midas Sound had the volume at almost painful levels, scaring away many but still remaining at capacity, but the party was over at Club Soda, where Cheap & Deep, Jacek Sienkewicz, and Shed closed the night with techno, with only the occasional hints of the dub that was meant to be the theme for the night. Quite the welcome to the weekend, as were the afterparties that people headed to once the official performances were done.
