Matthew Dear might have the most recognizable voice in techno, a smooth baritone that has appeared on dozens of his own tracks since his 2003 breakthrough, Leave Luck To Heaven. What’s probably more impressive is that Dear doesn’t just go whoring out his vox to anyone, not even his own Audion alter-ego. Nope, to hear Dear on the mic, you have to wait patiently for one of his new records, the latest of which, Black City, is out August 17th on Ghostly International. The first track of the album, “I Can’t Feel,” is available now from Matthewdear.com for the cost of an e-mail. Dear makes like a robotnik crooner ala the best of Bryan Ferry over some afro-tinged beats that sound like Vampire Weekend heard inside a pot of boiling water. Good stuff.
