One thing we know about Kanye is that he doesn’t do anything quietly. So while the crackpot visionary MC has been keeping a relatively low profile in preparation for his next album—the return-to-rap Good Ass Job—there’s nothing tip-toeing about the first single, “Power.” In fact, we haven’t heard this many hand claps on a cut since the breakdown of Billy Idols “Eyes Without A Face” (somebody sample that, quick!). In fact, this track, reportedly produced by No I.D. S1 of Strange Fruit Project, pretty much gives banger a new definition for 2010, which is why we always look forward to Yeezy’s production. Sure, folks will take the rhymes to task, this is a Kanye record after all. But given the subject matter—jumping off buildings thinking you’re a superhero—and Kanye’s own propensity for self-delusion, combined with the fact that the song smartly samples King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man” and you’ve got art going on in all the unexpected places. Like Michalangelo’s secret messages in the Sistine Chapel. That’ll do wonders for Ye’s ego.
