You know all the warmed over classic soul music you’ve been hearing on the radio the past few years? You pretty have Mark Ronson and his work with Amy Winehouse to thank for that. But it’s a new decade kids, and Ronson is satisfying his collaboration jones on “Bang Bang Bang,” a new song off his upcoming album, Record Collector.
The track features A Tribe Called Quest legendary leader Q-Tip, no surprise given Ronson’s established hip-hop background. But more consequential to the sound of the song seems to be MNDR, the Brooklyn synth geek whose among the leading proponents of “Chillwave,” the latest sub-genre mixing twee songwriting and rudimentary analog melodies. We’ll admit, it’s good to see Ronson stepping away from the cover tunes for a change, but jocking the hipster sound of now might not be the best recipe for success. You decide, is this new sound a step forward for Ronson, or is he trend-jumping.
