UPDATE: Village Voice Gets It Wrong About URB Getting It Wrong About Lauryn Hill Headlining Rock The Bells

Wu-Tang, KRS-One, Slick Rick and Eric B & Rakim To Perform Classic Albums

UPDATE: The blog world loves a good pile-on, so we expected to get plenty of crap when we posted that Lauryn Hill would be headlining this year’s Rock the Bells tour, only to have her name left of the official line-up announced last night at the RTB press conference. Fine, our wink, wink, nudge, nudge with the source wasn’t as accurate as it seemed, but then there’s Rob Harvilla over at the Vilage Voice who called us out, then proceeded to talk some nonsense about Ms. Hill, stating:

Well, actually, Lauryn does appear on the official Rock the Bells press release (announcing four North American dates, including Governors Island August 28), but only as a not terribly official-sounding “special guest.”

Well, we read the press release up and down, top to bottom twice, and the only mention we see of Ms. Hill is in the list of past performers at Rock the Bells. The words “special guests” (Harvilla’s quotation marks, not ours) never even appear in the document. So where is this information coming from? We might get a rumor wrong, but at least we read press releases before wrongly using them to take our peers to task.

UPDATE: Yesterday we reported that Lauryn Hill going to be announced as the headliner for Rock the Bells 2010. And then no announcement was made at the Rock the Bells press conference. So what does it mean when your inside sources tells you “I can’t confirm anything, buuuuttt, I won’t deny it.”? Apparently, not much. Here’s hoping that the ink is just not dry on the contracts.

We CAN however confirm that Ms. Hill will be performing at the Harmony Festival at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa California.  So those disappointed in her not (yet) scheduled for San Bernadino might want to make a trip up to wine country.

And we were right about one thing, that the theme of this year’s festival will be artist performing their classic albums, including Slick Rick performing the Great Adventures of Slick Rick. Krs-One performing Criminal Minded, Rakim performing Paid In Full and The Wu-Tang Clan performing Enter the 36 Chambers.

The official press conference isn’t until, but we’re ready to call this one like FOX News. Hip-hop enigma Lauryn Hill will be headlining this year’s Rock The Bells tour. The ex-Fugees songstress will be performing her classic solo album, The Miseduction of Lauryn Hill, as part of a complete album format that has become an increasingly popular way for legendary acts to draw attention to current tours. Also rumored to be performing a full-length at RTB2010 is A Tribe Called Quest. Perhaps they’ll join Ms. Hill in a rendition of Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly,” The Fugees’ most infamous hit, which sampled ATCQ’s “Bonita Applebum.”

URB spoke to representative of Rock The Bells who would not confirm…or deny the booking. The official Rock the Bells press conference takes place tonight at The Key Club in West Hollywood.
