VV Brown 655x848 Live review: VV Brown @ The Troubadour (05/12/10)

The beautiful British pop-soul singer and renaissance woman VV Brown entered the stage barefoot, tall as an amazon. She was dressed like an Egyptian Goddess; long white velvet dress with a golden loincloth, and a red stripe across her face. She was backed by a six piece band, including a 3 piece brass ensemble to funk things up from her debut Travelling Like The Light. Her style of music goes from vintage girl group sound, to rockabilly, punk and soul. The gifted singer-songwriter has the lungs of fellow brit Shingai Shoniwa of the Noisettes and the playful attitude of Janelle Monae. She had a versatile set, even including an afro-beat jam and a cover of Drake’s “Best I Ever Had,” minus the smoothness in favor of some grit. The highlight of the set was her love song “Back In Time,” about a nerdy ex who studied Physics, and featuring a vocoder. It was a refreshing set from a singer who weren’t afraid to involve the crowd, had a dirty mouth and also played a beautiful ballad on the piano.
