About a week ago, we were all excited to hear the new song by Interpol, “Lights,” a seeming return to their gothic roots that got us all re-excited about guitar rock back in 2003. We were especially titillated by bassist Carlos D, whose DJ sets combining everything from Guns N Roses to The Cure had us dancing night after night at burgeoning hipster parties like Steve Aoki’s and Franki Chan’s FUCKING AWESOME!!! Thursdays and the long running Club Bang. We even put him solo on the cover of URB, making him the first “rock star” cover in our magazine’s history.
We then repeated the respect by including Carlos in our 15 Year Anniversary group cover, placing him out front with Moby, ?uestlove and Jean Grey. So we’re obviously a little disappointed that Carlos D is leaving Interpol to “pursue other interests.” One has to wonder if perhaps Interpol’s scheduled opening dates for U2 this summer had anything to do with the decision. Maybe the slow but unstoppable freight train to fame had become too much for the bassist.
The good news is of course that the band’s fourth album is finished and will be released this summer. So we get at least one more Interpol record containing Carlo’s inestimable influence. As for who should replace Carlos D, at least for the band’s tour, we’re curious who you would choose.
