Sonicbids Selects: Montreal DJ Ksk514 (MP3)

Keisuke Yoshino’s been all around the world and weaves musical genres to create a dream-like state. URB first selected one of his tracks for our Next 1000 back in 2009, and the Japanese-born, Montreal-based artist describes his sound as ambient and deceptively simple. This time around, we caught up with Keisuke to meet the voyager behind the music.

Name: Ksk514
Location: Montreal
File Under: Electronic/Dance

URB: How did you get into music and where does your name come from?
KEISUKE YOSHINO: As a kid, my first exposure to Western music was Thriller. I was into metal in high school and played bass in a band. Eventually, I developed an interest in hip-hop, electronic music, and DJing.

I thought of a lot of different names for my music and I figured it would be best to have a simple name. “Ksk” comes from my name “Keisuke,” and “514″ is Montreal’s area code.

You moved to Montreal from Japan when you were around 25 and you travel a bit. How does that global perspective play into your music?
Having a global perspective provides me with a lot of insight. Most of all, it reminds me of where I’m from and where I stand now as a person. I think this perspective allows me to be creative in every aspect of making music. I’m pleased to be in a multicultural place like Montreal where diversity is celebrated. Also, after moving to Montreal, I discovered that it’s a city full of talented people. Another interesting thing about visiting different places and being exposed to different cultures is that you get to witness how music travels and adapts.

Do you prefer gigs to studio sessions? Why or why not?
I like both because they are two different experiences. Right now the studio allows me to explore my creativity. I’m open to the idea of DJing again if an interesting opportunity comes up.

You also played in a band. What makes being on your own more fulfilling?
Being on my own is fulfilling because I have more control over my time and creativity. Magic can happen in the studio when those two elements merge.

What’s inspiring you lately?
I’m interested in books, films, history, nature, science, pop culture, and fashion. Inspiration often strikes in a subtle way, when you least expect it. The key is to be aware and follow your instincts.

Who do you dream of performing or working with?
Anyone who is interested in my music. My dream collaborators include David Lynch, Morrissey, Kanye West, Lisa Loeb, Marc Jacobs, and Haruki Murakami. It would have been amazing to work with John Hughes if he were still alive.

What can we expect for 2010?
To continue to experiment and have fun making beats.

What’s the most valuable part of using Sonicbids?
To get recognized by a publisher like URB! I was very pleased by the fact that URB selected my track for its Next 1000 in 2009. This time around you have given me the opportunity to be profiled. It seems like there are a lot of promoters who use Sonicbids as a tool to connect with artists, and vice versa.
