Christian Prommer: Eclectic Spring Mix 2010 (Podcast)

Christian Prommer

Eclectic Spring Mix 2010

Christian Prommer, the Munich-based drummer, DJ and fine producer known from Fauna Flash and Trüby Trio will release the second volume in his Drumlesson series this spring. Amongst the tracks being reinvented this time around on Zwei are Dennis Ferrer and Jerome Sydenham’s “Sandcastles,” the downbeat electro of Jean-Michel Jarre’s “Oxygène Part IV” and Carl Craig’s “Sandstorms.” It teaches us jazz interpretations of some of the biggest house and techno classics. Still buzzing from his recent performances at WMC Miami, Prommer teamed up with URB to present this exclusive podcast.

Track list below interview.

URB: How different is it to work as a drummer versus a producer when it comes to laying down a rhythm?
CHRISTIAN PROMMER: Not very different. It’s always about the beats. As a drummer you should listen to the music you play to from the listeners’ perspective. Same applies to the producer. The beats rule the music.

Does modern electronic music have the same impact on you as jazz?
Similar, I would say. Energy and spirit is important to both. The freedom of jazz is different to the one in dance music. I love both.

Does this project give you more room for improvisation than with Voom:Voom, Fauna Flash or Trüby Trio?
Oh yes, for sure. I always like to jam and improvise. With five musicians in a room, there is of course a lot of interaction. Playing with people is always exciting, because you never know exactly what is going to happen.

Do you think of dance floor aesthetics when it comes to Drumlesson?
Definitively. I think of my Drumlesson project as a “live played DJ set.” So the minimalism of the dance floor is the key to this.

Did you want to go in a different direction on the new Drumlesson Zwei?
I tried to get a little more psychedelic and “KrautRocked” flavor as inspiration. There are a lot of very cool German acts from the ’70s and ’80s that are very inspiring for me right now. Besides that, I played on all the tunes this time.

Are the tracks on Drumlesson favorite tracks of yours, or tracks where you see a potential for rework?
They are my favorite tracks. I see it as homage to the originators: beautiful electronic music.

Tell us about your podcast mix.
This mix is a collection of music that I listen to and spin when I DJ. It’s all over the place, of course. I like songs as well as tracks. From Mark Hollis, Owen Pallet to Stimming, die Vögel and Peter Kruder. I really like tunes that are crossing genres. Also included are some tunes that I did for my album and 12 inch remixes.
