Rapper Big Pooh
The Purple Tape
Not to be confused with a “street album” or a run of the mill mixtape, Rapper Big Pooh’s come with easily the best compilation of 2010. Partnered up with Detroit Beat King “Black Milk” on the production side of things, this cohesive effort is definitely keeping the Hall Of Justus tradition alive. The concept itself was formed during the end of European tour mid-flight with Big Dho as witness. A response to “Reservoir Dogs” Mixtape which had HOJ alums Joe Scudda, Chaundon, Jozeemo and Pooh all going in over other instrumentals, “Purple Tape” is the teaser before “Dirty Pretty Things” LP sees the light of day.
I can still remember hearing “Sleepers” on vinyl, “NC to LA” on Evidence’s Weatherman LP. The final Little Brother album “Left Back” had a listening party not to long ago, and to say Rapper Big Pooh has delightful bars is an understatement. T3 giving him a hard time more than made up for the half hour spent looking for parking. Moments like these remind us of why rap is as relevant as ever. “Say Something” the Prince “When Doves Cry” sampling banger featuring Dj Flash is worth the bandcamp registration process alone. Plus their outstanding live shows and tour schedule is what makes them your favorite rapper’s favorite rappers. Having a Weezer moment recently on the road, Dho, Scudda, Jozeemo & Pooh have all recovered after a spin out in Vermont left them all a little banged up but no worse for the wear.
Hall of Justus is the Movement, can’t say I didnt warn you. “Not your average Joe” Joe Scudda’s solo project has appearances by Carlitta Durand, Diz Gibran, Naledge from Kidz in the Hall, and Evidence. Phonte & Dj Brainchild on GGR demystify misogny in the industry on Episode 17.
