At first glance, seeing a song with Sadat X of Brand Nubian fame and Pete Rock of the legendary Pete Rock & CL Smooth duo, this sounds like a dream collaboration that is about ten years to late in the making. In reality though, these two hip hop veterans sound every bit as good as they did in their “prime” on the latest Sadat X single, “Turn It Up”. Yes, Pete’s production sounds a bit different than his traditional sound, but I would put this up against some of his best works on the Soul Survivor series. He loops up a fuzzy guitar sample that just bleeds some psychedelic flavored late sixties sample or something. This seems to bring out the best in Sadat X after some rather lackluster releases the past few years, as he brings the lyrics and style that made him one of my favorite emcees of the 90’s. This is how the vets should be bringing the heat.
