Dilated Peoples’ DJ Babu Reveals Passion for Production

URB: One of them is Rhymefest?
BABU: One of them is Rhymefest. One of them is Juice, believe it or not. Mikkey Halsted is a young, talented spitter also in the group, and I have not met the other member yet. We are very early in the talks. I don’t want to jinx myself. You might even hear Juice and Rhymefest battle on the record or during shows. Also, look out for a Babu and LMNO LP. Look out for a Babu and Blaine 1 LP. Look out for a Babu and Montage 1 LP. Look for an EP by Loath Carolina. I am really out here just trying to spread my sound.

URB: When can fans expect that LMNO project?
BABU: No later than 10/10 [October 2010]. LMNO is on a super mission–if you think I work hard. This dude is doing ten albums this year. He is working with the likes of myself, Kev Brown, LD, but he is trying to do ten albums and gradually release them by October and by 10.10.10, he is going to release them as a box set, so he is really going off on this ten thing. Not to toot my own horn, but I am also busy helping Evidence with his next album, Cats and Dogs (Rhymesayers).  Rakaa’s album (Crown of Thorns) is coming out on Decon later this year, and I am all over that.

URB:  Everyone has been excited for any Dilated project, but I think fans are really waiting for that Rakaa project. What can you tell us about that?
BABU: We feel the same way. We are really excited for him. We trying to inspire and crack the whip. Rakaa has been waiting his whole life to make this album, and he is just not taking any shorts. When one of us releases an album, it is like all of us are releasing an album. After we get through all of this, hopefully a new Dilated album in 2011. We are really enjoying our freedom of being independent.

URB: Since you are at a point in your career where you are constantly looking to expand your outlets, have you considered making music for films?
BABU: Yes. One of the unique successes of the first album that I really want to explore more are licensing my music. I did a beat on the last album, and it ended up being a song called “Gun is Gonna Blow” by Terminology on Duck Season 3. On top of that, Grey Goose came out and listened. I am really trying to be Moby with this next album. If a rapper wants to buy one of my beats, take it, let’s go. If Cartoon Network comes along and they need some bumpers between their tunes, let’s go. I think that is the future of it. I think Moby, or one of those electronic dudes, set the standard by having all of their songs on their album licensed. At the same time, my hands are tied because I blatantly sample.

URB: You guys will be a part of Paid Dues this year. What can fans expect from your set, and who are you looking forward to seeing at show?
BABU: Over the last few years it has been an evolution for Dilated Peoples. Touring for ten plus years and doing the same songs over and over again can be borderline suicidal. Shows have been really refreshing the last couple of years. There is a time in our show for everyone to perform their solo material, and then we finish by hitting them over the head with our classics. I am looking forward to seeing Jay Electronica. He is just a fucking monster. I am looking forward to 9th and Murs. Ice Cube. A lot of it is just seeing old friends. I plan to get to Paid Dues really early this year and have my Flip Camera ready.
