The venue was hot, the drinks were strong, but some Djs didn’t play my song. The Red Bull Thre3Style is a competition to find the world’s most party hyping’ DJ. The main focus is to crown the DJ that has mastered the drop, scratch, and fade spinning that keeps a party going into the early morning. While some Djs were playing tracks more suited for a lounge atmosphere, others definitely came to compete by the timing of lyrics like “Get your dam hands up,” and “Turn my music High.” I arrived to a packed Playhouse in Hollywood last Wednesday listening to “We love L.A” getting spun into a battle mix. The Red Bull Thre3Style in Los Angeles was live and popping.

Dj Fashen, (Thee) Mike B, Cheapshot, Hoff, Politik, Prophet, Dirty Dave and Morse Code were all battling to get the crowd in party mode. Giving the 1,000 + music fans in attendance (including DJ Z-trip, DJ Muggs, and some non-music related celebrity like Mischa Barton, and Brody Jenner) only a glimpse at the Red Bull Thre3Style series. The witty Eric Dlux (Dj and host on Power 106) introduced each DJ as they went up to their platform. Judges J Rocc (Stones Throw), Gary Richards (HARD), and Jeremy Dawson (Shiny Toy Guns) were held with the stressful task of selecting a winner. The competition was intense! The rules were clear; no mixing programs were to be used other than serato, and at least three different musical genres were  incorporated in each 15 minute set. The eight DJs wasted no time scrolling through their track lists,  spinning crowd teasers, and pleasers every other second.

My favorites for the night included the youngin’ out the bunch DJ Politik (came in 3rd), the sexy DJ Prophet, who sprinkled a bit of Latin spice to his set playing “Suavemente” by Elvis Crespo, DJ Cheapshot (came in 2nd), and the winner of the night Dj Nathaniel Morse aka Morse Code. Sealing the deal spinning Jay Z’s “On to the next one,” Morse Code confidently ending his set playing the lyrics “FREEZE…someone bring me back some money please.” The crowd went crazy! Wow, talk about being ready for the U.S. finals in Denver.  Yet, the amazing rhythm and tempo introduced by the battle was only a warm up to the guest performer “Serial Wax Killer,” DJ Mix Master Mike who closed the show.

Peep the video to see the judges commentaries before selecting the L.A. winner (Morse Code):
