Fan Death
A Coin For The Well
Electro duo Fan Death sparked blogosphere buzz in 2008 with the hearty throwback thump of the single “Veronica’s Veil.” On the group’s debut EP, A Coin For The Well, artists Dandi and Marta serve up more hip-rattling new-wave and cut a groovy swatch of slinky neo-disco.
Lifting their name from a Korean urban legend about the potentially fatal nature of sleeping with a fan in the room, the ladies of Fan Death are not playing around on “Power Surge,” a retro dance floor anthem which bubbles over with earnest, breathless lyrics and the urgent whine of disco violins. “Son Will Rise” quivers with skittering synths and fat, pulsating drums as the ladies coo reassuring words about the morning light we’ve all craved when the night gets a wee bit too crunk.
While Coin is lot of fun beats peppered with moody lyricism, the vibe can get monotonous which is truly unfortunate for a five-song EP. With a sound that combines the sensual rhythms of Chic and the lovelorn abandon of Hercules and Love Affair, it’s not thoroughly original. But with a healthy appreciation for both the classic and the contemporary, it is thoroughly enjoyable.
