Bomb the Bass: The Man Behind the Smiley (Video)

URB: You still use the name Bomb the Bass, though. Have you thought about changing it since your style is so different now?
TS: I’ve thought about it. The Neneh Cherry, Depeche Mode credits are all under my own name. But I’m known as Bomb the Bass, so for my own projects, I like to keep it.

URB: Once, you were more associated with hip-hop/electro/sampling. Any plans to go in that direction again?
TS: The music I’m producing now is very, very different, for sure. I still love hip-hop. There’s a whole new school of producers doing great things with beats.  There’s always a possibility.

URB: Do different places cling to different parts of your work? In the US most people remember “Buffalo Stance” fondly. Any chance you’ll ring up Neneh Cherry one day?
TS: I don’t know, really. I saw her a few years ago. As far as I know, she is a celebrity chef now, living between Sweden and London. It’s been a while. But, it’s true: in Eastern Europe, they’re all about the Depeche Mode work; in the UK, there’s still a lot of talk about the old acid rave culture–which I really had nothing to do with.

URB: Yeah, you were just an innocent bystander.
TS: I was, really.

URB: How do you reflect on that earlier part of your life and career now?
TS: It was a great time; it all seemed so surreal. Doing interviews was difficult; I didn’t really have that much to say. Now, I feel that there’s history, I’ve lived a bit now, I’m more comfortable with myself. I feel that’s the key, really.

URB: Any other parting words of wisdom to aspiring musicians?
TS: It’s a job, as well as an art. It’s not just about making music anymore. You have to understand the whole process–finishing the record, getting it out there. You have to work. You have to really enjoy what you’re doing. You have to hit the right spark as well. The music has to be good, it has to resonate with a few million people–know what I mean?

URB: Not really. But I think you do.
