URB: I also noticed there’s a taco stand at the venue. Was this your idea? By the way, I think it’s a great touch.
When I heard that they were going to have food, I immediately suggested that they should have soul food. I remembered a party from back in the day, I think it was called “Red Beans N’ Rice,” where they would play hip-hop and serve soul food, amazing combination, I might add, but the owners had already hired a guy to serve tacos, burritos, quesadillas, etc., and for anyone that’s tried them, this was not a bad decision.
URB: I have a silly question–what’s up with this obsession with “weirdo cat” you always speak of on Twitter?
Weirdo cat is just this cat that lives under my car. I came out one afternoon and as I approached my car, he came out from underneath it, and as he walked away, he gave me a very peculiar and weird look that wasn’t just “thanks a lot buddy for moving my shelter for the day” but I think–or imagined–it was a little deeper than that, like I tend to do sometimes. I talk a talk a little bit too much about my personal life on Twitter. I don’t know if you can consider that my personal life, but one day I said something about weirdo cat on Twitter and all these people chimed in wanting to know what he looked like, why was he weird, etc.? There were a lot of questions people wanted answered. So I continued to Twitter about it for fun.
The stories of my ex-roommate had gone away, the stories of my neighbor who gardens in her bikini and heels had gotten old. I think people were ready for something new, which seems silly, but after Twittering a few times about weirdo cat, I literally ran into somebody I didn’t know, at a club who came up to me and asked, “What does weirdo cat look like, what would become of weirdo cat…” I spent two weeks staking out my car to get a photo or video of weirdo cat and finally I did. Once, I put the photo and video on Twitter “the cat was out of the bag.” Once that happened there was no mystery to weirdo cat and that fizzled away, although, every now and again, there is a weirdo cat update.
UBR: If you could have a super power for one day, what would it be why and what would you do with it?
I’d probably want to fly. I would fly really fast and make the world go backwards (like Superman in the original Christopher Reeves version) and turn back time. I would then figure out at what point music started turning bad and figure out how to prevent this from happening. Wait, but that might be pointless cause its only for a day?
URB: No, the changes you made from your super power would be permanent.
Okay, then that’s what I’d do. I’d figure out how to get rid of all the bad music.
URB: Awesome! And I have one more, if you could share with us some of your favorite albums, what are they?
I’ve been asked this question many times, and I’m always stumped. So I always answer with the first five that come to mind. In this case it would be: Songs In The Key Of Life by Stevie Wonder, Purple Rain by Prince, Some Great Reward by Dépêche Mode, Daydream by Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald, and… Bach’s greatest hits, if there is such a thing. I’m a huge Bach fan.
URB: What about Bach do you love so much? I don’t know very much about classical music. What’s his tone?
There are so many levels to Bach, it’s hard to say… Hmm, it’s just beautiful music; really, really beautiful music that seems so simple but is quite complex.
URB: Great answer! Okay, I think we’re all done here. Is there anything I missed or you’d like to add?
I’d like to add that I think it’s very special that URB is doing this piece because URB was such a huge part of hip-hop culture when I was coming up as a DJ, I learned about a lot of music, graffiti artists, rappers, etc. from reading URB and am humbled and flattered to not only have had the opportunity to be on the cover as part of She Wants Revenge a few years ago, but to be doing this interview as well. URB is the shit and Raymond [Roker] is the man!
