Female MC’s have definitely been around for a while. From the early days of Blondie to the shakes of Salt N’ Peppa, ladies have continuously been apart of the rap game.
But the game is constantly changing and in order to stay in the system, you have to know how to play. American-born-Hong Kong-raised-Parisian-resident, Uffie knows exactly how to be a lady in the rapping game. And no it doesn’t have to do with being a lyricists at all, according to her. She will just tell everyone exactly what they can do (just look to the title of the track).
“MC’s Can Kiss” is Uffie’s official first single from her upcoming solo debut, Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans (Ed Banger Records). The daring darling made her first splash on the international music radar as the princess of party with J.U.S.T.I.C.E.’s “Tthhee Ppaarrttyy” track (you know, the one indulging in being drunk and freaky), establishing herself as an MC in the electronic and dance arena. But to follow in tune with former boyfriend/current labelmate DJ Feadz’s comments that “you don’t need an album to be a star,” Uffie didn’t want to stop there. Rather than take the Ke$ha route and play nice like a lady rapper in the pop game should, whom many have said have ripped her off, she stood her unstable ground and gave them all the middle finger with her first single and full length album.
“MC’s Can Kiss” runs right alongside her previous contributions, rapping more with a purpose of just representing a rebellious youth, rather than articulating a style or technique (although many would say her technique is that she doesn’t have one). But the allure of her carefree mentality and “if I get popular, I’ll know that ain’t fair” attitude dares each listener to care even less than her to the point where even her lack of rhyming, works. Not to mention the pitch-perfect production from Mr. Oizo, who bangs his way through the track with sonically-charged synths and DJ-friendly beats.
So apparently there are two types of MC’s in the game, those who rap and those who don’t care, female or not. And frankly, she “don’t give a fuck. ”
Well, then let’s just dance.
