As we approach the 45th anniversary of the march on Selma, our good friends at the San Francisco Art Exchange have curated a not-to-be-missed-if-you-can-get-there event.

Jones to Speak against Backdrop of Rosa Sat, Martin Walked & Barack Ran, the Gallery’s Commemorative Photo Exhibit Celebrating Black History in America

WHO: Theron Kabrich and James Hartley, international art dealers and founders of San Francisco Art Exchange (SFAE), welcome Clarence B. Jones, former personal counsel, adviser, speechwriter and close friend of Martin Luther King, Jr., to the downtown gallery.  Jones is currently a Scholar in Residence at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Institute at Stanford University.  He is also the author of What Would Martin Say, a book published in 2008.

Jim Marshall, a legendary rock-and-roll photographer from the Bay Area who documented the 1960s Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi, will also be on hand to talk about his featured photos and experiences of the era.

WHAT: A gallery reception at which Jones will speak about his work with Dr. King in the Civil Rights Movement and answer questions about his day-to-day interaction with the remarkable leader.  Jones will also sign copies of his recently released book, What Would Martin Say.

Jones’ SFAE appearance is part of the gallery’s celebration of its current exhibit Rosa Sat, Martin Walked & Barack Ran:  Courage, Endurance, Victory.  This is a special collection of more than 60 historical images from nearly a dozen photographers depicting the lives of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., and President Barack Obama, and honoring their influence and accomplishments.

The commemorative event takes place leading up to the 45th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery marches that marked the political and emotional peak of the Civil Rights Movement.  Jones was involved in these key events in Alabama that brought about the National Voting Rights Act of 1965 which outlawed discriminatory voting practices.

WHEN: Reception:  Saturday, February 20, 2010; 7 to 10 p.m.

Rosa Sat, Martin Walked & Barack Ran is on display through March 31, 2010.

SFAE’s regular hours are Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and

Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.  SFAE is closed on Sunday.
