What can I say that you wouldn’t expect?
Louie was in fine form but you could have guessed that. Give him a Funktion 1 sound system and that glorious old mixer he takes everywhere and watch the man work. Undeniable.
But then there was some serious top shelf lighting to match Cielo’s usual top shelf bar. Marlon never fails to serve up a choice cocktail when behind that bar. Should you find yourself in front of it I suggest you trust the man, he is one of New York’s finest.
And then there was the crowd but you could probably guess how that went down too. Some of NYC’s finest dancers and industry heads were in attendance, a true delight to see on the dance floor as the room bounced with years of history and love for Louie, Anané and their history. Mike from Nervous Records did a fantastic job at making us all feel at home within that history.
With the room in full swing Anané took to the stage for an intimate yet strong showing of a few tracks from the new album. Her vocals were a delight, a solid mixture of club bounce with pertinent and meaningful lyrics from a woman forced out of her native home of Cape Verde. She had something to say and we listened. I have never seen the Cielo crowd just shut down and pay attention like they did, everyone tuned in with both ears and a bit of soul. All in all a fantastic night wrapped up by the lady herself gracing the tables to give her husband a break from what turned into one of his expected extended sets.
Ananés World is out now in all good record stores and online outlets, do yourself a favor and grab it. The disc is laden with latin, funk, soul, reggae and choice house sounds.
