The late, great Alice Coltrane would be proud.
Her great nephew, California’s Flying Lotus (born Steve Ellison) has released one of his latest experiments in preparation for the upcoming May release of Cosmogramma rightfully titled, “Quakes.” Although the track won’t be on the actual album, it does appear on Warp’s latest compilation titled 2010, featuring other Warp acts like Bibio, Pivot and Africa HiTech. (Right now you can download tracks from Gonjasufi, which was produced by Flying Lotus, Nice Nice and The Hundred in the Hands for free on the Warp website.) But I’m sure listeners wouldn’t mind a sample from the bass-heavy producer.

“Quakes,” which is nothing short of Flying Lotus’ signature dub sound, walks like meter reading a 3.5 earthquake, but with style. The short clicks and the steady beat prove that dub can be just as good when slowed.
