Apparently I missed a fight backstage…where was I?
Anyway, Statik Selektah’s projects have always been filled with an even mix of emcees across the increasingly irrelevant categories that we like to place them in. Conscious, gangster, mainstream and underground alike. If you can spit, he has a place for you, all in the name of hip hop. I shouldn’t have been surprised at that the lineup of artists and special guests that came out to celebrate the release of his new album 100 Proof.
Donny Goines scared a fan or two after jumping in the crowd during an energized set. Truck North, represented Philly well with some choice cuts and help from Slim. But they weren’t the only artists from the Illadelph to grace the stage. Bahamadia absolutely destroyed a few verses and was later joined by Detroit’s own Invincible.
Skyzoo, Terminology, Torae, El Da Sensei and Sha Stimuli also rocked and the good thing about last night was the respect between artists. Most were out in the crowd during the show, checking out each other’s performances.
By the end of the night, the heavyweight guests came out. Styles P did a short set including the acapella above and a new track from 100 Proof. Freeway ran threw a few of his classics and Lil Fame from MOP showed up as well before the legendary DJ Premier closed the night out. Tonight proved that as the sound and stature of hip hop expands, Statik Selektah will be making sure the boom bap will never die.
