Wknd Video Roundup: The Roots Jam Session and Grammys

This is why I barely watch TV

We can’t all be A-listers and it’s pretty hard for me to watch three hours of TV, so I gathered the clips that mattered to me. If you need water cooler talk, I gotcha covered.

THE EXCELLENT: With all the hoopla surrounding The Grammys, The Roots Jam Session is the hands-down winner for high-quality and a star-studded turnout. As one of the best house bands and true aficionados capable of bringing down the house, this was one of the night’s highlights. Read the full recap and photos to come soon.

THE WTF MOMENT: Did they even perform? The amount of dead air is RIDICULOUS. I heard they didn’t even curse during the performance (can someone confirm this?) which makes it even more annoying to watch. Those could have been cardboard cut-outs for all we now. Honestly. And isn’t there a problem when the songs being performed raise the question of censorship? Would it not imply that the standards are outdated? Or the ratings need to change? If I can see a barely dressed woman onstage (see Pink), then this song should have been performed according to its own artistic integrity, thank you very much. Also, if we are going to follow that train of thought, I think the visual is more powerful than the language usage, and if we are going to be conservative and impose restraints, I’d rather hear profanity than further promote this objectionable image of women.

UPDATE DRAKE, LIL WAYNE & EM: Someone ripped an uncensored version, and in much better quality. Holla at Please Don’t Stare for the link. Notice that it’s from Italian TV.

THE CYNICAL MOMENT: What a corny intro! Ugh. I shall overlook it, this being The Grammys, I guess… The Gaga teaming up with Sir Elton is quite the study in eccentric music icons (or icons-in-training). Yet, I think we sometimes overlook the fact that, really, Lady Gaga is doing nothing new in her attempts to be outrageous… and that’s a little boring, which is why I refuse to consider her an icon. I wonder what will become of her in ten years and if she will have the longevity of Elton. The talent is there, absolutely, I wish it wasn’t such a spectacle because it feels too manufactured in a fame factory. Girl, use your skills not our heels to get ahead. Thanks. PS: that high-cut one-piece makes your legs look manly.

THE TRIBUTE: Aside from the plug to purchase the This is It DVD, I have no qualms about this performance. In fact, it was good and a stand-out moment. Jackson would have eventually received the Lifetime Achievement Award, and I’d like to believe that he will be remembered for all the positive things he did in his life and the unmeasurable impact on music.
