Disco Biscuits – Planet Anthem (Review)

Disco Biscuits

Planet Anthem

Released by SCI Fidelity/Diamond Riggs

Currently on a nationwide tour, the Disco Biscuits’ album Planet Anthem is fueling their upcoming tour stops, unlike their prior albums. Even while exercising their trademark blend of electronic and jam-rock elements, the Biscuits take few risks with Planet Anthem, adhering to their traditional formula of bland, often hackneyed lyrical moments (see the first lines from the opening track “Loose Change”), bolstered by jam-ready instrumentations. When it boils down, Planet Anthem is merely fodder for live jam sessions.

This however should not categorize Planet Anthem as a meaningless recording. “On Time”  is abundant with transforming synth layers and features funky, soulful bass lines. “Fish Out of Water” is perhaps the album’s most endearing track, featuring an early ‘90s Cure-style, chiming synth and a catchy sing-along chorus. Planet Anthem finishes energetically with a sweetly nostalgic track in “The City” and the album’s punchiest track, “Big Wrecking Ball,” featuring a killer guitar melody and B3 organ pad.

Planet Anthem certainly will not rival the Biscuits earlier, finer albums, but will surely provide the variety, energy, and open-ended, jam-positive tracks necessary to power their tour, Camp Bisco 9.

wow almost 4 outa 5, I’ll be honest I am a bit skeptical after hearing both EPs but I’m still excited for the album. I think the part of this review that makes me happiest is the fact that there actually is a finished copy of the album out there, I had been sure that it was never going to see the light of day, still pissed it got pushed back to march now though.
