iPad Unveiled, But Can You DJ With It?

Update: Having spoken to reps at Ableton, it’s clear the iPad, which uses the same OS as the iPhone, will not run their software. It is unlikely that other music programs would run for the same reason. So, who is going to build the first high-functioning music software for the iPad?

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Steve Jobs announced the release of the iPad this morning in San Francisco. Details are coming so fast, we recommend you just keep hitting refresh on Gizmodo every 15 seconds. But what we want to know is, will the iPad stable enough to run Traktor? Serato? Ableton Live? If the answer’s yes, than the DJ booth just became a much cooler place.

Can you DJ with the iPad? Not really, but you can use it as a midi controller to control real DJ/Audio making programs, check out the article and the how to:

There are many reasons y it wont work. Maybe someone out there will develop a great iPad app for this. I know they have tried in the past with the iPhone, but those were toys at best. Check out this article: http://nycelectro.com/2010/02/02/can-you-dj-with-the-ipad/

  6. I honestly think that with stuff like TouchOSC out there, we could have ourselves a cheap lemur.

And who knows, maybe someone with enough know-how can make a Virtual DJM 800. That’d be sick. I need one of those…

I there’s likely gonna be no real new innovations for iPad Djing besides TouchOSC and maybe a Serato collabo, but serato sucks so what do i care haha.

I don’t think it will run either one of those DJ/production programs considering it lacks an OS. However, the real functionality comes from the ability to use the multi-touch interface as an OSC/MIDI controller a la Jazzmutant’s Lemur. From this perspective, the iPad becomes a very tasty device at a fraction of the cost.

DJ skills will soon be replaced by robots, Skynet will destroy music in the process.

ok i just saw what happened, the Ipad doesn’t do multitasking? maybe they need to modify the software, ok nevermind, the CPU is not thta powerfull i guess……….This is strange, why are there no camera’s on it?????>>>> Do they want us to buy the IPAD now and next year come our with another ipad, but the other ipad would have another name like IPAD AIR and have the camera and can do multitasking….so we would have to spend money again
hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahaha are there companies doing that kind of crazy deals???

i think that if you want to dj, you need to use 2 IPAD. They can have a virtual turn table on each. You would have two turn tables, you can have the mixers on the same page, like you press back and you can get more details, such as effects for example, you can probably switch it to keyboard and stuff. That would be nice. It would need to have a good sound card, 32 bit quality and very good latency. This software should be easy to do. You would just need 2ipad with this software, and they could be connected to each other by bluetooth to know which on is left and which one is right. So they will have to put such kind of bluetooth sensors, to know how you arrange the ipads, which one will be left and which one right.

Imagine a magnetic carpet with sensors on it connected to the cpu and then sending signals to the magnet, working together to balance an object ! negative feedback controll.

companies like Torq or tracktor should of collaborated with them but i think they are sleeping, i think Ableton would be neat if they make a nice DJ IPAD by Ableton, cause they have the best software for making music
