Green Velvet

URB.com Exclusive Mix

For nearly two decade, Curtis Jones has been one of dance music’s most commanding and intriguing personas. First as Cajmere and then Green Velvet, the Chicago jock has produced cross genre hits from 1992’s smash “The Percolator” to 2007’s hipster anthem “Shake & Pop.” Most recently, Jones released “Everybody Wants” with Kid Sister, just one of the new generation of artist who owe much of their sound to Jones original jackin’ style. But Green Velvet is still the king o the dance floor as this exclusive one-hour mix for URB proves.

INTERVIEW WITH GREEN VELVET

You haven’t worked with a vocalist since Dajae. How did you connect with Kid Sister for “Everybody Wants?”
Kid Sister is the first female vocalist I’ve worked with since Dajae. Jamie Principle was the one who initially made me aware of KS. Then my people got in touch with her people for the “Everybody Wants” project.

Do you think music has changed  around the past few years, predominantly house/techno and do you feel like you need to change anything your sound to make yourself stand out there once again?
I’m always changing my sound. For me time brings about change and if you stay stuck in the past then you get left behind. As an artist, I like to always try and do something different and  innovative.

Green Velvet has obviously been your most known of your production identities, also the darkest it seems…do you feel making music under certain monikers brings about a different state of mind during your production process?
I use the different monikers for the different styles of   electronic music. Cajmere for the house and Green Velvet for the techno.

Do you see yourself returning to your Cajmere persona at any  time?
I’ve recently been thinking about doing some Cajmere projects in  2010. I am really excited about a lot of the house music that is coming these days. Recently playing under Cajmere in Germany has motivated me to contemplate new projects in the near future.

You came up at such a momentous time in Chicago music. Do you  think it’s still possible to have such a strong regional movement?
It is definitely possible to do something big in Chicago again.   The good news is that there are lots of young, talented and passionate house heads here. We are thinking about launching new   events in Chicago under Cajual Records. Stay tuned.

Your lyrics are constantly sources of both amusement and  confusion. What’s the one thing most people don’t understand about what you  are saying?
I think that my lyrics are clear for the people who are in the   “scene”. Sometimes I feel that people don’t understand that I love   them and all I’m trying to do is help.

What’s next for Green Velvet/Cajmere/Geo Vogt/all your   other   aliases?
My new single ‘Turn It Up’ feat Santiago & Bushido. I’m also excited about my new album coming out with Afrojack, Robthreezy, De La Soul, Tommie Sunshine and possibly a couple other unique artists. It’s really going to be exciting how all these projects come to play. Stay tuned everyone, 2010 will be a very big year.
