Album of the Year – KID CUDI (MAN ON THE MOON)

URB’s summer cover star went and did exactly what he was supposed to, releasing an album that crossed all the lines in the hip-hop, electronic and indie communities. How could it not when Cudi got down with Kanye, appeared on Letterman with Ratatat, and sampled Band of Horses—all for his debut album that felt like the biggest release of ‘09. You all felt the same.
Runner Up 1 – PHOENIX (WOLFGANG AMADEUS PHOENIX)
The french foursome struck gold on their fourth album. Pop songs for days and live show that rocked without ever untucking their shirts.
Runner Up 2 – YEAH YEAH YEAHS (IT’S BLITZ)
Three-for-three! The kids from NYC scored a near-impossible feat with a third album that completely evolved their sound, but still fit neatly into their flawless catalog.

URB obviously does not have the fully knowledged readers to make this poll relevant. KID CUDI, no. Raekwon no also. Deadmau5, no. The only relevant winner that was listed was Major Lazer. I have much respect for all the artist, events, promoters etc listed but C’mon. How is any live event bigger then Lalapalooza? Where is Beatport on the download site. I know that you cannot please everyone but this seems more like a popularity contest then who should have actually won each category. Where is Kanye when you really need him to jump on the stage?

Kid Cudi did not live up to the hype of the mixtape that put him on the map. I hope the same thing doesn’t happen to Drake. Raekwon got robbed. Cuban Linx II is the best rap album of the past few years. Mos Def also got shuffled under the rug too quickly by Urb readers.
