2009 URB Readers Poll Winners

URB’s 2009 Readers Poll was a race to the finish, with fans of several key players voting until the bitter end on Xmas eve. So whose music reigned supreme in 2010? Let’s find out.

We all know that Deadmau5 can activate his fan base like he’s switching on a MIDI controller. This is the guy who shut down the Apple store in Santa Monica when he made an appearance in May. That’s some Depeche Mode in the ’80s steez.  No wonder the radical rodent lapped his peers in the voting for Artist of the Year. Oh yeah, he also released a stellar album of his patented brand of minimal trancy techno, and wowed capacity crowds across the country with his helmeted live shows.

Runner Up 1 – MAJOR LAZER
Diplo and Switch took no prisoners on their much hyped dancehall debut as a weaponized cartoon officer.

Runner Up 2 – MAYER HAWTHORNE
The soul savior from Detroit put the Stones Throw label right back in the center of the musical universe where it belongs.

URB obviously does not have the fully knowledged readers to make this poll relevant. KID CUDI, no. Raekwon no also. Deadmau5, no. The only relevant winner that was listed was Major Lazer. I have much respect for all the artist, events, promoters etc listed but C’mon. How is any live event bigger then Lalapalooza? Where is Beatport on the download site. I know that you cannot please everyone but this seems more like a popularity contest then who should have actually won each category. Where is Kanye when you really need him to jump on the stage?

  3. Kid Cudi did not live up to the hype of the mixtape that put him on the map. I hope the same thing doesn’t happen to Drake. Raekwon got robbed. Cuban Linx II is the best rap album of the past few years. Mos Def also got shuffled under the rug too quickly by Urb readers.

  4. [...] of all, the results are in for the URB 2009 Readers Poll and I wanted to send a big thank you to everyone who voted! My mix CD Infinity +1 won Compilation [...]
