Okay, 1st off, I didn’t take the photo at the bottom so not trying to claim I did it was on google. And if anybody saw the links I posted recently knows I’m a lil’ overwhelmed the last 24 hours in terms of what to put up & what is coming soon. Let’s just get this established 1st off, Bilal’s easily one of the best male vocalists I’ve ever seen. I saw Common’s performance on jimmy kimmel live for the finding forever LP & Universal Mind Control. He goes hard in the paint. Can we all agree on that? I think yea, if you never heard Bilal’s 1st born second on interscope your missing out on some of the best Dilla beats 1st off, I mean “Reminisce feat. Mos Def & Common” was so influential on me growing up. I feel like a senior citizen going to some of the venues these days and a toddler at others, but that track showed me what was important in life. Just Common saying, “I brought her onstage when Bilal sang soul sista, in europe where it dont really be no sistas” that line right there was enough to make me buy the 12” single and play the instrumental (for hours) so that’s where I’m @ with that honestly. But once I started staying in record stores all day long just listening to everything, buying all I could afford…
Really happy times. For real. No Bullshit…. Again, I let time pass, went on my career, started doing photojournalism as a career once Serato gained popularity and I had no laptop, no mp3 collection, I went on tours left and right, just trying to keep drawing, shooting, loving music and being honest about what art can and should be & not starve or become homeless, a close friend of mine played me some tracks off the unreleased “Love for sale” LP which features a version of SA-RA’s “Hollywood” with Bilal as vocalist, it just confirmed so many things I thought privately but couldn’t express musically as far as why I stopped playing out every week multiple times, and “Sweet & Sour You” those tracks just made me feel like I was ushered into a secret circle of amazing albums and artists who weren’t on the radio everyday or playing huge venues in the states, but talk to anyone who knows anything or claims they do, they’ve either been to a show and witnessed the magic 1st hand or is clearly faking the funk.

Those two songs confirmed a place I was going intellectually I felt nobody but me felt. Just really put me on a path to wear I am now.. “I sat on my rooftop and blazed a j” that lyric, the melody thats connected to it? Insane, and “get lost and burned out, hollywood hollywood, yeah!” I had given up on my dj career and being an artist 1st and foremost but started to just concentrate on doing what made me happy, mainly going to Record Surplus on pico, Aaron’s records on highland, the house of records store across the street from the old grammy building right by the 10 freeway @ centinela, and solid gold oldies on hollywood blvd. That was where I found Return to Forever 8 tracks for $1 and cee-lo “getting grown” singles with acapellas + instrumentals on vinyl for less than it costs to buy a swisher nowadays..
Wow, I’m waxing poetic so intense right now I’m getting a little teary eyed. Jeez, before I start full on with the nostalgia just look at this video and tell me it didn’t make you appreciative for your day of rest. Forgive me, I love music way before I knew what wi-fi is or starbucks had a label and they handed you free itunes download cards with your naked juice.
All I will add is he’s up for a grammy this year to and deserves it, but if you put your info at the bottom if you want to come to his show coming up next week @ the echoplex in Los Angeles, tell me your story of how his music transformed your perception of the genre(s) + if it is heartfelt and undeniable I will get you in to that show no questions asked…
