Alan Palomo has no time to breathe; between touring for both his electronic projects (Neon Indian and VEGA) the dude needs a break. With rumors swirling of VEGA getting signed to some big-time indie labels, and a move to NYC, Alan deserves to take a second and collect himself. After all, he’s released a handful of remixes and and one release under VEGA, and he’s got no plans to stop. During his tumultous CMJ schedule, Palomo took time out his busy day to talk to URB in the pouring rain outside of Webster Hall.
URB: How did the VEGA sound come about?
It came about the sounds of 70s artists like Todd Rundgren, Wendy Carlos, but re-contextualize those sounds together in a modern fashion. It’s been branched off so much, partly because of Neon Indian, picking apart samples and just making things your own. In the end it’s about personalizing your sound and reflecting your thought process into music.
There’s been talk about Valerie and VEGA doing something together, is a collaboration in the works?
I’d love to work with VALERIE, I love their stuff. I was talking to Russ Chimes about a year ago to get something done, but we haven’t done anything yet. But I love their stuff, that College album “Secret Diary” has been on rotation on my speakers. Hopefully soon.
Are you ever gonna stop touring?
I’ve been touring since May, dude! We’re not gonna stop until mid-January, and we’re not just doing VEGA shows, we’re pulling doubles with Neon Indian gigs as well. Do I have those moments where I’m excited to be on tour? Sure. But I also have moments at 4AM waking up saying, “Where am I?!”
Is it that true that you’re moving to New York very soon?
Yes, indeed. I think by mid-December or January at the latest, I’ll be moving from Texas to New York. I was here during summer 2008 and I definitely felt some good vibes here. I mean, all the people I’ve worked with on remixes and stuff live here so, it’s going to be awesome to settle down here.
What are you looking forward to the most post-touring?
I’m looking forward to taking off my socks, putting them on a plate with bagel crumbs on it and just sit down and watch Kids In The Hall or Strangers With Candy. Just chill and shit.
What are the recent artists you’ve been listening to lately?
Washed Out, Dirty Projectors, Real Estate
Who are some of your biggest influences?
Yellow Magic Orchestra, Boards Of Canada, Todd Rundgren.
