Ikonika's Influences
Hyperdub heroine Ikonika has been dropping gems for a while now. Starting with her two releases in 2008, she cemented her status as a producer among the dubstep massive. Her DJ sets, which range between funky, dubstep and future garage, have opened up eyes and shaken body parts all across the world. She took the time out of her busy schedule (gigs and upcoming album) to give URB an exclusive mix of her musical influences and a few answers to our questions.

IKONIKA – Q & A
URB: How’s 2009 been treating in terms of creative output?
The beginning of this year I completely changed my studio set-up, which allowed me to experiment more with my sound and just go crazy with it. I just want to take risks all the time, do something new with every beat I make.
You’ve got an album coming out in the not-too distant future…any details on it; sound, flow and the label you’re releasing it on?
It will be coming out on Hyperdub early next year. It’s just pure Ikonika. It really represents where my head is at the moment. I think it’s emotional and violent as well as colourful and approachable.
What tracks have you been dropping lately that are staples in your set?
I’ve been playing a lot of funky/house kinda of stuff from guys like Bok Bok, Kingdom, TRG, Deadboy and Joy Orbison as well as more dubstep orientated 140BPM stuff from Guido, Joker and Gravious. I¹m also dropping a lot of Juke.
Favorite pre/post-gig activies?
Drinking.
Tell us about this mix you put together.
It’s basically a load of tunes that have influenced me to make music. It has everything from Dilla beats to Dillinger Escape Plan to Madonna.
