Bomba Estereo x Amoeba = Fiyah

I caught up with Colombian electro-cumbia act, Bomba Estereo, at Amoeba in Hollywood on Monday night. I’ve seen other in-stores before, but there’s nothing quite like seeing folks clapping and full-out dancing in the record store. Instead of toning down the performance to fit the tiny stage and brightly lit space, Bomba brought it out full force. Lead singer, Liliana Saumet, has a phenomenal raw performing style (she never planned to be in music) and her fashion choices make all the other hipster girls look like plain Janes. Simon Mejia, on bass and samples, is Li’s counterpoint, steering the band just enough to prevent a mad-house of rhythms and rhymes. It was my second time catching the band, and they continue to surprise and enchant me–and that says a lot. I’ve had the debut, Blow Up, since the end of June, and it hasn’t worn itself out.

The set included “Cosita Rica,” “Mi Africa,” “La Boquilla,” “La Nina Rica,” “Feelin’” and ended with “Fuego.”

You can still get our exclusive “Fuego (Pacha Massive Fiyah Remix)” here.
