Various Artists – Daptone Gold (Review)

Daptone Roster

Daptone Gold

Released by Daptone Records

Soul’s recent revival has been in part due to the soulmen and funkstresses at Daptone Records.  For about a decade, the small yet burgeoning NY label has made stellar projects featuring Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Lee Fields, Antibalas, Menahan Street Band and many more.  Each tangent of the empire has independently made noise, adding to the interest for vintage grooves and catapulting their own careers (resulting in collaborations with everyone from Amy Winehouse to Jay-Z among others).

While the label still reissues old lost records, Daptone Gold celebrates their contemporary roster.  Featuring famous hits, b-sides and lost cuts, the 23 track comp is a testament of what the label is all about—dusty drums, thick bass, horns, and plain exuberance.

Hits like “How Long Do I Have To Wait For You” by Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and “Make The Road By Walking” by The Menahan Street Band are fiery and catchy as ever; while less known tracks by Budos Band (“Up From The South”), Binky Griptite and The Sugarman Three (“A Lover Like Me”) and The Gospel Queens (“I Need you To Hold My Hand”) show the depth of their already deep roster.  The duet between Lee Fields and Sharon Jones (“Stranded In Your Love”) is one of the most believable and heartfelt joints in recent memory.  Other songs by Charles Bradley and Naomi Shelton and The Gospel Queens,  round out this bevy of solid soul cuts.

The packaging for this release entails a gatefold double LP encased in gold foil with liner notes, a poster and sticker.  The CD package has a booklet, mp3 card, and photos as well.  Daptone Gold is a killer comp that truly represents the quality and consistency of its enterprise. Highly, highly recommended.
