Bassnectar “Quite Possibly” On Acid (Interview)

Quite simply put: Lorin Bassnectar is a super producer slash DJ who has devoted himself to the world of music. Not the music industry, not the music business, but music itself. His fresh approach to his craft has led him down the path of awesomeness, you can hear it in his beats, you can see it at his shows, you can turn the volume all the way up and just let that shit bounce. That’s what Bassnectar is about. Bassnectar himself was a mystery to me until I got the chance to really speak to him and learn about him. I wanted to know who this person was behind the hundreds and hundreds of songs he’s churned out for years. He works with five computers and eats the same thing for breakfast everyday, he believes in giving back and being there, so that what he does, he gives back and goes there. His new album Cozza Frenzy is sonically epic and his shows are like giant raves with him at the center, enjoying it all while striving for hummingbird time. Read this interview and then go listen to his shit, you’ll dig it, I swear.

URB: What did you have for breakfast today? It’s not oatmeal is it?
Bassnectar: *Laughs* No it’s not oatmeal, when I’m on the road I’m hardpressed to find anything that I wanna eat reliably. When I’m home there’s like three or four cafes that I hit up every morning, I get two scrambled eggs with spinach and an english muffin and double Americano, I get that religiously. Eating that same thing when I’m home like tells my body that i’m home and I can relax. It’s nice.

Your tour schedule is pretty epic, how does one person prepare for such a crazy shindigs? City after city, show after show, throwing down.
One person alone does not do it, I am definitely the sum of many parts of many people and I was raised in a commune and I have a communistic collaborative project, it’s grueling and it’s wild but it’s also so ill. We have a constant roadcrew of five to ten people and we’re gonna take a massive group of folks on the road this time, it is a lot of people, I just wanna give props there. Secondly I don’t psych myself into because I feel like I’m permanently in, so kinda have to psych myself out of it. It’s cool it’s exhausting, and its probably been like six years or so and we’ve been doing hundreds of shows a year. Before that it was six years of just kinda building up to that, every year feels crazier than the last, and this year has felt crazier than any year and it’s been more and more wild. I’m taking it more and more seriously because…like…..well success is difficult to talk about without sounding arrogant.

Like an asshole.
Yeah, what a fuckin dick! No, it’s…I’ve seen some responses on that road that are just so moving to me, it just inspires me incredibly.
