Since 2004 Jean-Christophe Le Saoût has been releasing Euro-styled hip hop for the masses. It’s important to note from whence these beats came and much in the same way that DJ Cam or Nightmares on Wax can be figured as non-residents of the States, Le Saoût – who works under the clever name of Wax Tailor – sits in roughly the same part of the genre.
That’s not snide or meant to undercut the Frenchy, but tracks like “Go Without Me,” which features Charlotte Savary on vocals, ultimately sound detached from the BK or LA rap stuffs of the past – or even the present.
Of course, this type of singularly constructed, rap related work isn’t as unseemly as the vocal guest spots would lead one to presuppose. In fact, a great many of the guest appearances work to Wax Tailor’s advantage – Mattic’s verses on “Until Heaven Stops the Rain” are a good place to start.
The strength of this deejay and producer, though, isn’t necessarily crafting backdrops for others to rhyme or sing over. It’s in the emotive and all too short interludes of “Masquerade Theme” and “Escape Theme” that Wax Tailor displays his musical clout. The shuffling drum of that first track or even the odd bounce to the latter reveals true talent.
It might be too much to ask for an album entirely of those brief snippets, but if that did ever occur it would undoubtedly result in a world wide appreciation of Wax Tailor.
