Dixon
Temporary Secretary
So basically, Dixon is a madman. Do not make the mistake of thinking that Temporary Secretary is simply a collection of songs and mixes to keep club goers whittling away their limbs on the dance floor into tiny, useless nubs; it is muy deep. In what seems to be an effort to call the “mix cd” out on its shit, the songs that appear on Dixon’s latest release only sound like this on Temporary Secretary. Confused yet? He sliced and spliced every song to Frankenstein together his own versions of said house hits. Ambitious is quite the understatement. While a brilliant concept indeed, it is this element that lends itself to this project’s strong and weak points. It starts out a bit slow with a rendition of Icasol’s “Ongou” and doesn’t really get fired up until Precious System’s and Ben Klock’s “Let Me Show Ya (Henrik Schwarz Remix)/Something About You (Instrumental).” A build up is one thing, but for all cylinders to fire up four songs into an album is a bit much. Everything flows really nicely however. It has to- it was designed to. Preference does play a large part in the listening experience however. Though tracks like Kiki’s “Good Voodoo (Visionquest Remix)” keep the momentum rolling with urgent synth stabs, soothing keys, haunting voices and the occasional explosion, some of the tracks leave the desire for their original counterparts. The Machine’s “Fuse” is a good example of this- losing some steam in the process. Dixon’s fanatical tinkering and molding is worth it in the end but at the same time, it gives even more power to the concept of taste.
