Meet 26 year-old Nathan Hayes aka Atlantic Connection: part man, part machine. With just ten years of music-making under his belt, AC has already become a bona fide hustlin’ DJ, producer, promoter, record label owner and, until recently, maintained a full time job with MTV Networks (listen for Nathan’s tracks on MTV’s Gone Too Far and VH1’s Tough Love). Drum and Bass is his staple, but these days you can catch AC playing everything from electro house to dub to disco, and while he’s been pumping out plenty of underground LPs, mixtapes and remixes, it’s his “Cruel Rumor” collabo with MC Julz the Huntress that has kept the party scene poppin’ off in 2009.
Atlantic Connection embarks on an international tour beginning next week, headlining shows in the Caribbean, New Zealand and Australia, then he’s back to the US with a solid list of gigs (check his MySpace for more info). Catch him before he blasts off at one–or all–of his three shows this week in Los Angeles: AC’s own monthly, Soul Good (Wednesday, 10/21 @ Little Temple), RESPECT (Thursday, 10/22 @ Dragonfly) and also opening for LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad at Bassrush (Saturday, 10/24 @Vanguard).
Check out our interview with AC (below) and also cop a few of his mixes ready for download at http://www.myspace.com/atlanticconnection.
YOU ARE READING THIS RIGHT NOW BECAUSE: MTV canceled TRL, and now you’re bored.
I WAS BORN IN: Bogota, Colombia BUT NOW I LIVE IN: Los Angeles, California BECAUSE: it’s easier to get Folgers instant coffee.
GROWING UP, I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE: a commercial airline pilot. Producer/DJ was close enough!
WHEN I DJ, I PLAY: panty droppers. All. Night. Long.
WHEN I PRODUCE, I CREATE: baby making music– at least, that’s what I’m told.
SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT ME IS: I lost my virginity in a DJ booth. (what, don’t believe me?!)
I LOVE IT WHEN: when random people on the street do nice things for each other.
I FUCKING HATE IT WHEN: producers think that dropping an acapella over a different instrumental classifies as a “remix”. FAIL!
I’M INSPIRED BY: Sunrises, flying at 35,000 ft and producers who arent afraid to take risks
I’M INSULTED BY: bad DJs with high paid bookings
IF I COULD WORK WITH ANYONE IT WOULD BE: Justin Timberlake.
IF I COULD TELL ONE PERSON TO SHUT THE HELL UP, IT WOULD BE: Only one?? Impossible.
THE COOLEST PLACE IN THE WORLD IS: Belize BECAUSE: because nothing! Go and see.
MY FAVORITE COUNTRY TO PLAY IN IS: Canada. Toronto, more specifically. BECAUSE: they turned me on to Korean BBQ.
THE WORST PLACE I’VE PLAYED IS: At a frat party in North Carolina circa 1998. One idiot goes, “Dude, got any Creed?”
LOS ANGELES IS YOUR CURRENT HOMETOWN CUZ: its absolutely bonkers 24-7.
IF I COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT LA, IT WOULD BE: better public transportation, less smog.
MY MOTTO IN LIFE IS: “EZ on the Lettuce.”
THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME WAS: Hearing (seeing) my music on TV for the first time. And this article….ha
MY BIGGEST FEAR IS: not being able to do what I love.
IN 5 YEARS I WILL BE: recording an album in a villa in Portugal. And making more money than you.
IF I COULD GIVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE, IT WOULD BE: sort it out, son!
