Lily Allen Alone in Illegal DLing Debate

Tags: ,

A few weeks ago, Lily Allen started to run her mouth on illegal downloads, and now some of the biggest female music stars are weighing in.

They are not (entirely) on her side.

NME is reporting that Shakira told Sky News, “I like what’s going on because I feel closer to the fans and the people who appreciate the music.” Continuing, she said,”It’s the democratisation of music in a way, and music is a gift. That’s what it should be, a gift.”

While Norah Jones acknowledged that it’s “not ideal for the record industry,” but the fledging bands can hit the road to earn a living. She added, “If people hear it I’m happy. I’m not going to say go and steal my album, but you know, I think its great that young people who don’t have a lot of money can listen to music and be exposed to new things.”

Nelly Furtado had the most keen insight, saying the days of the big paychecks are giving way to something a little more humble, but still enough to earn a living as a musician. She said, “You’ll find an audience, and you may not make like millions of dollars but you’ll make enough to have a house and a family and a car.” Furtado added, “I don’t know though, maybe the clock is ticking.”
